A Brunswick man is facing charges after making fake 911 calls multiple times.

20-year-old Ryan Paul Blanchard is accused of calling 911 and leaving the phone off the hook.

A Frederick police officer responded to calls and found a pay phone off the hook with no one around.

Officers decided to conduct surveillance on several of the pay phones where the calls originated from.

Blanchard drove up to a payphone, made a call, and drove away. After the officer confirmed that a 911 call had been made from the phone, he followed Blanchard and conducted a traffic stop.

After the officer told Blanchard he saw him using the phone, Blanchard confessed to an earlier call.

He said he just wanted someone to talk to.

Police charged Blanchard with two counts of telephone misuse. On each charge he could face a maximum sentence of three years in jail and/or a $500 fine.

He was released on personal recognizance after going before a District Court commissioner, authorities said. An October 22 court date has been set.
