RELEASE FROM THE HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT:

Tampa, Fla. - - The Hillsborough County Health Department will begin administering H1N1 (swine flu) vaccinations in select Hillsborough County Public Schools beginning Tuesday, October 20.

The first students to receive vaccinations will be those attending exceptional education centers. Beginning the week of October 26, elementary, middle, high, charter, adult, virtual, home schooled, homebound, and adult students will begin receiving vaccines. Middle and high school students will receive vaccinations at the schools they attend during the school day. The others will be able to go to a high school between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., according to the schedule developed by the health department and school district.

All minor and exceptional education students are required to have a signed consent form in order to be vaccinated. Elementary school students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The first vaccinations will be administered at Caminiti and Lavoy exceptional student education (ESE) centers beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, followed by Dover (Willis Peters) and Eisenhower ESE centers. Lopez ESE Center and D.W. Waters and Simmons career center students will receive vaccines on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and, if necessary Thursday, Oct. 22.

The week of October 26, teams of health department nurses will begin administering vaccines at middle and high schools during the school day. Schools scheduled for the week of October 26 include Freedom, Newsome, Steinbrenner, and East Bay high schools, and Liberty, Randall, Martinez, and Eisenhower middle schools.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of that week, elementary students who have signed consent forms and are accompanied by a parent or guardian may receive flu vaccines between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the following high schools: Leto, Jefferson, and Armwood, and Bowers-Whitley Career Center. Students who fall into the other categories listed above may also go to these schools, or they can wait to go to a school that is more convenient for them at a later date.

Additional schedules are being developed based on what is learned at these schools, the supply of vaccinations, and the demand for the vaccinations by students and parents. The district website will be updated with current information as it is developed.
