"Miss Betty" 2009 Local Winner Jefferson Award

Last Update: 4/13 4:17 pm

We'd like to introduce you to local Jefferson Awards nominee, Miss Betty J. Perry
of Clearwater.  Betty was nominated by fellow church member, Justamona B. Mack who shared the following with us:

Miss Betty J. Perry is a member of Mt. Zion UMC.  She has personally sponsored and
organized a Breakfast Ministry for individuals and families who are homeless, less
fortunate and or considered under privileged.  Those who know her, fondly refer to
her as "Miss Betty."

Miss Betty started this ministry at Mt. Zion UMC in Clearwater several years ago when
she first served breakfast to one homeless individual who would come around the church property early on Sunday mornings while she was preparing coffee and something to eat.
In a few weeks, the number of attendees grew to six.

Now, four years later she serves between 200 to 250 individuals and families every Sunday Morning.

Miss Betty believes this is a mission placed on her heart through divine inspiration
and because of this belief, she does not allow anyone to discourage her.

She personally finances the costs associated with the breakfast for her ministry.

Some volunteers come and help with serving the food.  Miss Betty has expanded her breakfast ministry to include a clothes collection.  She also collects food, and personal hygiene items for the needy.  With the moral support of her Pastor, the assistance of other Mt. Zion church members and outside volunteers, she prepares food to provide a Christmas Dinner annually for those who are homeless, ill or just in need of companionship on Christmas Day.

If one should ask why Miss Betty continues this ministry week after week, without
complaining or expecting from others, it is because she cares about others who are
less fortunate than herself.  I believe Miss Betty is an unsung hero not known by
the media and deserving of the Jefferson Award for Public Service.  She is truly
an outstanding individual and an asset to her community and all who come in contact
with her.
