Your resume should highlight the strength of your skills

Every job seeker is looking for an advantage over other candidates, and one of the best ways to set yourself apart is to highlight in your resume the strength of your skill set. Just remember, though, more doesn't necessarily mean better. Some candidates include "skills" that have little or no bearing on their ability to perform the duties of the job. To wit:

"QUALIFICATIONS: Old soul."

Casper the Friendly Candidate.

COVER LETTER: "Not only will I work, but I also am capable of thinking."

You should have thought twice about including this statement in your cover letter.

"ABOUT ME: I have a lifetime of wisdom, hope and chutzpah!"

But we're looking for three to five years of accounting experience.

Some individuals also try to distinguish themselves by listing awards or accomplishments they've received. If you take this approach, focus on professional honors only.

"AWARDS: Won personality contest in college."

In other words, a "winning" personality.

"AWARDS: Took part in a fashion show and was named runner-up."

We know this candidate will follow the dress code.

And, although it may seem obvious, be sure all of the information you send to a prospective employer casts you in a positive light. You don't want to sell yourself short. The following job seekers forgot this rule:

"EXPERIENCE: I have experience in retail and marketing. I am not that experienced, though."

Let us be the judge.

"EXPERIENCE: The majority of my experience lies outside of the professional world."

We'll need more to go on.
