I have a big issue with the cash for clunkers. Now as a smart car owner, I own a ford escort. Part of the reason why I got this car in particular is because it gets good gas mileage. The people who are not smart, who buy cars that get bad gas mileage, are getting a brake. What about the people who avoided this problem from the beginning? Where is our brake?

Cash for Clunkers has another negative consequence. It will harm donations of cars to charity because the voucher is much greater than the tax deduction for donating a car. Congress could have stimulated car sales by just returning to allowing car donors to claim the book value as their tax deduction. Since most donated cars are recycled, there would be an environmental benefit as well. Karen Campese, CEO Cars4Charities http://www.cars4charities.org

My plan: Sell my current small car, that gets 25 mpg. Before July, buy a car with worse mileage, insure it for a year, and take advantage of this voucher towards the end of the program. I am not ordinarily one to buy a new car, I am usually thrifty and environmentally conscience, but I can find one for less than $10000, and with a $4500 voucher I could pay as little as $5000 for a brand new car. I don't drive much anyway, so the impact on the environment and my wallet for driving a car with poor mileage would be minimal. On the other hand, this looks like a lot of work to save a few thousand on something I wasn't planning to buy, and it could backfire if the bill doesn't get passed, or if it becomes more reasonable when it does. Sucks how you have to have a car with poor mileage. Why does the government reward people with gas guzzlers?

This bill does not do enough. The MPG restriction eliminates all three vehicles my wife and I own (all vehicles get less than 22MPG, but more than 18), and not everyone will be able to afford a brand new vehicle. This bill will flop because I'm sure there are many out there in the same boat as me, or cannot afford a new vehicle. Thanks for nothing.
