Sarina Fazan

Last Update: 9/18 10:18 am
For Sarina Fazan, sitting in the anchor chair at Action News is the culmination of a lifelong dream.

After moving to Seattle from Kashmir at the age of 2, Sarina learned English by watching Walter Cronkite and Barbara Walters. While other kids were playing with dolls and puzzles, Sarina was practicing her future career with a microphone she made from aluminum foil.

Sarina moved to Tampa in 1999 after working as an anchor in New Orleans and the Quad Cities. She loves everything about the bay area, from Gasparilla to the Buccaneers, and the multiple award-winner has earned a reputation for landing interviews with some of the area's biggest and most controversial newsmakers.

Sarina wakes up early every morning to devour the newspaper and have a cup of coffee before her workout. An avid exerciser, Sarina wants everyone to know boxing -- and not kickboxing -- is her favorite way to stay in shape.

English is Sarina's fourth language, and like her idol Barbara Walters, she struggled for years to overcome a speech impediment. It did not keep her from pursuing her dream, though, and she encourages everyone to do the same, no matter what obstacles are in their way.

Sarina, her husband Dave and daughter Samantha are happy to call South Tampa home.

On how she loves the color pink: "My parents truly lived the American Dream. They moved to this country from India with 2 children and one on the way. My dad had only 24 dollars to his name, and no prospect of a job. They moved to Seattle, and in with my uncle. Determined, my dad landed a job and with hard work made a good living for his family.

He was able to move us out of an apartment and build a house. My parents were so happy—they allowed us to decorate our rooms however we wanted. I remember them saying pink would be pretty—so everything in my room from the carpet to the bedcovers were pink.

I know this is really a serious story and pink is such a light hearted color—but it reminds me everyday with hard work dreams can come true, it reminds me to of all the sacrifices my parents made as first generation Americans.
