Most recently, WFTS was awarded 1st place in the South Florida Society of Professional Journalists 2009 Sunshine State Awards for Deadline Reporting, I-4 Disaster, and 1st and 2nd place for Consumer Reporting, Taking Action for Your Money and Taking Action for You.
Also in 2009, the Associated Press recognized WFTS-TV, ABC Action News as Florida’s best overall TV news operation.
In addition, WFTS was awarded 1st place for best newscast and 1st place for best television website.
WFTS also won a 2009 Regional Murrow award for Breaking News coverage of the disaster on I-4.
On July 28, 2007 at 6:00pm, WFTS-TV became the first broadcast station newscast in the Tampa DMA to broadcast in high definition.
In 2008, WFTS ABC Action News was recognized as the “Best Newscast” at the 58th Annual Society of Professional Journalists Green Eyeshade Awards, a regional journalism competition among 11 Southeastern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
ABC Action News also earned several awards from the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists, including first place in the 'Spot News' category for coverage of the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in St. Petersburg. WFTS was also awarded first place in the 'Investigative series category for a compilation of Taking Action for You stories.
